Overview

The Vice President, Underwriting is responsible for oversight, direction, and performance of Planet Home Lending’s underwriting management and staff, supporting all origination channels. This position will partner with the Retail and TPO Operations Managers to support the credit escalations and interpretations for their assigned channel. The position ensures that the Underwriting Department performs to company set standards for quality, productivity, and customer service levels. The Vice President, Underwriting will influence the strategic direction of the Underwriting Department and serve as a SME for related Company projects.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Maintains an expert knowledge of Conventional, Government and specialty program guidelines in addition to all internal company products, guidelines, systems, operational policies and procedures. Key contributor for development and implementation of company initiatives impacting the underwriting staff. Oversees new and ongoing training for department underwriters.
  • Serves as a direct escalation point for Operations, Sales, and Underwriting. Performs second reviews for high risk loans and loans recommended for denial. Responds to post-closing loan deficiencies.
  • Ensures all loans are originated in compliance with state and federal laws and applicable agency and investor guidelines.
  • Performs human resource management activities including evaluating performance, recruiting and retaining top talent. Provides ongoing training, motivation, and team-building of staff. Balances conflicting resource and priority demands.
  • Participates in the development and implementation of the strategic direction of the Underwriting Department. Works closely with the National Operations Support, Vice President, Operations and Vice President, Closing to develop tactical plans to meet Company goals.

Position Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience
  • Minimum of ten years of experience in mortgage banking with an emphasis on underwriting and credit risk
  • Minimum of five years of supervisory experience
  • DE preferred
  • Thorough knowledge of loan processing, underwriting and closing policies and procedures
  • Expert knowledge of FHA, VA, FHLMC, and/or FNMA, investor and lender programs and procedures
  • Proven experience developing and executing effective and efficient policies and procedures for residential mortgage loan underwriting
  • Extensive knowledge of Federal and State mortgage banking regulations
  • Forward thinking with a demonstrated track record of successfully developing and implementing strategic plans calling for substantial growth
  • Demonstrated excellent interpersonal and leadership skills with an emphasis on providing superior customer service
  • Ability to cultivate and maintain effective working relationships at all levels of the organization
  • Thorough understanding of credit and an ability to review complex financial documents
